Am I Pregnant?

You want to know how to tell if you are pregnant. There are some early pregnancy symptoms that have been known to occur in some women. Please keep in mind that having these symptoms doesn't necessarily mean that you're pregnant. Also, many pregnant women will have none of these early pregnancy symptoms at all.

According to many pregnancy books, here are some possible signs of being pregnant:

Minor Bleeding or Cramps

A small amount of blood may be one of the earliest symptoms of being pregnant. You could notice this happening as early as a week and a half into your pregnancy. Different than your period - the bleeding would normally be earlier, shorter, and lighter in color than a normal period. Cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, may also occur early on.

Morning Sickness

One early pregnancy symptom is the classical one. Morning sickness. Don't let the name deceive you, "Morning Sickness" is actually a bit of a misnomer and can actually occur at any time of the day (or at night). For some women this can begin as early as 14 days after conception.

Increased Sense of Smell

Another possible sign of being pregnant is an increased sense of smell. This can really complicate your morning sickness. Certain smells may make you feel sick. You may be more sensitive to your co-workers perfumes or the smell of your favorite food for example. This is the result of your bodies hormones being in an uproar.

Tiredness or Being Dizzy

Another early pregnancy symptom can be tiredness or dizziness. Early in your pregnancy your progesterone (a hormone) levels increase dramatically. This can make you sleepy. Also, low blood sugar levels and low blood pressure can make you tired or cause you to feel faint or dizzy. Your body is undergoing some pretty dramatic changes and is expending a lot of energy to make them happen.

Sore Breasts

As early as week number two your breasts may feel sensitive or sore. Sometimes they feel heavier. One sign of being pregnant is a change in how your breasts feel. Women who report this symptom report it in many different ways. The common denominator is that their breasts feel "different" to them.

Mood swings

Mood swings may be a sign of being pregnant. Your hormones are in an uproar remember? You may find yourself very emotional and crying alot. A TV show may make you cry that normally wouldn't.

These hormone changes can also cause the stereotypical food cravings (or aversions) - the thought of your favorite meal may make you sick to your stomach. You may have this urge to eat things you used to find totally gross.

What to Do

If you're late or you notice any of the above early pregnancy symptoms above, you may want to take a home pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are very accurate these days, however please remember they are not 100% accurate.

The symptoms are not necessarily a sign of being pregnant. Many of the symptoms mean that you could be getting sick or have an infection. Your period could be about to start. Also, you could be pregnant without experiencing any of the above symptoms at all.

Nothing can replace the advice of a qualified medical professional. Even if the home pregnancy test is negative if the above early pregnancy symptoms persist you should see your doctor.
