How to Get Pregnant |
BreastfeedingMany baby books strongly recommend breastfeeding for the first six months at least. Other baby books recommend it for at least the first month. What they all agree on is this: Breast milk helps strengthen your babies immune system and has been designed by nature to be nutritionally balanced to give your baby the nutrition she needs. Breast milk is also easier on your babies digestive system, lowering the frequency of both constipation and diarrhea. Breastfeeding is a good thing for your baby. Unlike formula, breast milk is also dynamic. It changes over time and adjusts to your babies needs. The most important thing you can do when breastfeeding is eat properly yourself. This is not the time to go on a diet. You need the quality nutrition to pass on to your baby. Garbage in garbage out, quality nutrition in quality nutrition out. In the beginning you can expect to breast feed about ten times a day. You should feed your baby for as long as she wants to feed. According to most baby books, you should rotate which breast you feed with to allow for milk production. You'll know that your baby is getting enough to eat if she produces at least six wet diapers a day, anything less than that and she may be dehydrated. Once a breastfeeding routine is established you can bottle your breast milk. Breast milk should be kept in a sterilized glass or plastic bottle and you can keep it in the fridge for up to two days. Many baby books say you shouldn't use plastic bags as they can eliminate some of the milks antibodies. Some women will be advised against breastfeeding. You should talk to your doctor. If you are going to take prescription drugs, let your doctor know that you are breastfeeding. While most drugs won't transfer to the milk, there are some that will. You should also avoid smoking and drinking alcohol while breastfeeding. Our bookstore contains many excellent baby books on breastfeeding. They will help you learn more about feeding your baby.
