Changing a Baby - How to Change Your BabyChanging a baby is easy once you get the hang of it. You will need to change your baby up to ten times per day. Baby books tell us that if you are seeing less than six wet diapers per day your baby is possibly not getting enough fluids. The process of changing a baby is straightforward. Begin by using a very clean wash cloth - or baby wipes - and gently wipe your baby clean from front to back. According to baby books, you should never wipe baby girls from back to front as you could cause urinary track infections by spreading bacteria from the rectum. If you have a baby boy you will quickly notice that they will have a tendency to pee everywhere (especially on you) as a result of their little penis being exposed to the cold air. One tip offered by baby books is to keep a clean cloth over his penis during changing, thus keeping it warm and avoiding that reflex. Once the wiping is done, gently pat dry your baby with another clean wash cloth or small towel. The next step in changing a baby is to apply the diaper. If you're diapering a boy making sure the penis is pointed down before applying the diaper helps to prevent leaks. After you are finished changing your baby, any bowel movements should be flushed down the toilet. Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable DiapersIf you are using disposable diapers, make sure you empty your trash daily. Otherwise you will end up with bacteria and a really gross diaper pail. Cloth diapers can be cheaper if you wash them yourself. They will be more expensive if you use a service. Some would argue that cloth diapers are better for the environment. This depends. According to a few baby books, if you use organic soap and wash them yourself then this is likely true. If you use a service that uses commercial chemicals to clean the diapers then this may not be true. In any case, most parents still favour disposable diapers when changing a baby. Diaper RashDiaper Rash can be treated with cream, ideally one with zinc oxide. It is very common and normally nothing to be too worried about. However, if it lasts for more than four days you should talk to your doctor. You can prevent diaper rash by changing a baby often. Don't let bowel movements sit. It's a good idea to let your baby roam diaper free sometimes. Letting her skin breathe helps with rashes and helps to avoid them. Also, if you have cloth diapers and wash them yourself be very careful and avoid detergents or dryer sheets with perfumes etc... When changing a baby, if you notice a rash on your babies waist where the diaper starts - or on her legs where the diaper ends - you should try changing diaper brands, babies can be sensitive to different brands of diapers. This sensitivity can change over time. Our books store contains many baby books with information on changing your baby. You may find them to be helpful.
