Baby Development and Baby Growth

You want to know how your baby will grow and develop, what's "normal" so to speak. The first thing you need to know is that "normal" simply means average. Baby development and baby growth occur differently for every baby.

Every baby is totally different and follows a different timetable, so don't be upset if your baby is progressing differently than the norms below. If you have questions or concerns you should ask your doctor. Baby books also provide some good information on baby growth. They following are some approximations contained in some baby books:

One Month Old

Babies should blink at lights, respond to sound, turn towards your voice. Some may be able to smile or laugh or make little noises at this stage of baby development.

Three Months Old

Babies can laugh and smile, kick their legs, recognize you, recognize your voice, and hold their hands together. Some may be able to roll over.

Six Months Old

Babies can roll over, reach for objects, recognize their own name, baby growth experts say that some may start crawling or even be able to make two syllable sounds.

Nine Months Old

Babies can stand if holding on to someone or something, clap and bang their hands together, wave goodbye, and pull up to standing position from sitting. some baby development books say that a few babies may even be able to stand alone for a few seconds.

Twelve Months Old

Babies can point to things they want, crawl well, stand well, clap hands, and make babble noises similar to words. Baby growth books say that some may be able to understand basic instructions like "No" and possibly even walk.

Fifteen Months Old

Many babies can say a handful of word (including "No"), follow simple directions and sing. They may be able to run and could possibly even be able to climb stairs.

Eighteen Months Old

Babies should be able to say a dozen or more words, take off their own clothes, color on paper well. According to Baby development books, some may be able to begin potty training.

Twenty One Months Old

Babies should be learning a handful of words everyday, throw a ball, and open doors. Some may be able to name people by looking at a picture.
