Fertility Treatment

You and your partner have tried everything and you need help getting pregnant. What do you do? The first thing you need to do is talk to your doctor about your fertility problems. You need help getting pregnant. You should work with your doctor and find a fertility treatment that is best for you.

According to many fertility books, the treatment will depend on the cause of the infertility. Are you infertile or is your partner? Is it a hormonal issue? Is it a physical issue? Determining the cause of infertility is the first step in determining the solution to it.

Fertility Drugs

If your infertility is being caused by hormones being out of balance - or hormones that you simply don't have enough of - then drugs may be used to address the problem and ultimately may help getting pregnant. Often they can be used together with another fertility treatment like artificial insemination.

Artificial Insemination

Often due to physical or motility issues your partners sperm may have difficulty getting to the target. This fertility treatment helps your partners sperm get to the egg by inserting a concentrated dose at the right time.

Surgery

Can may be used sometimes to address physical issues like blocked fallopian tubes and ovarian cysts. Most commonly a device called a laparoscope (a long thin tube with a camera on the tip) is used to help locate and identify the problem. Surgery could then follow to correct the problem thus help getting pregnant.

Other Fertility Treatments

There are other fertility treatments that provide help getting pregnant such as "In Vitro Fertilization". These treatments can be expensive and success may vary. As always you should see your doctor if you have any questions.

Emotional Support

Fertility treatment is not easy for a couple to go through. Most fertility books tell us that treatment can be stressful:
"Will it work? Won't it work? Why can't we have a baby? What's wrong with us? What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you?"

It can be emotionally draining, put a strain on your relationship, and can also be very expensive. Many programs offer counseling to help you. Others do not. You should ask about this when choosing a treatment program or talking to your doctor.

You may also wish to talk to someone outside of the process who is knowledgeable about fertility issues. Many support groups exist that you can join on your own or with a partner. They are another way to get the emotional support that is needed as a part of fertility treatment.

Fertility Books

There are many books on fertility available in our bookstore. Some fertility books will offer lots of advice and guidance.
