How to Get Pregnant |
How to Get PregnantYou want to have a baby. You would like to know how to increase the odds of conception. Some couples are lucky and will conceive very quickly. For others it may take years of trying and frustration. Here's hoping that you're in the first group. In any case, there are some things that you can do that may help with conception. Here are some tips on how to get pregnant: Have Fun. Let's begin by remembering that this process is supposed to be fun. Don't become a slave to the calendar, test kit, or thermometer. Keep things interesting and try to keep the romance alive as much as possible. Fitness. According to many pregnancy books, being fit increases the odds of conception. This doesn't mean you have to go out and start running five miles a day. However, being significantly overweight increases the risk of high blood pressure during pregnancy, may cause diabetes, and may make it difficult to have a baby. Being significantly underweight will also decrease your chances too. A healthy body weight is the key and may help with conception for both you and your partner. Not only that, but being fit may reduce your stress level - which also may help with conception. Plus being fit is good for you! Eat healthy and take vitamins. Folic Acid is very important in both conception and a health pregnancy. Folic acid is a type of vitamin B and it may help to prevent certain birth defects such as spina bifida. If you are considering getting pregnanct, talk to your physician about taking both Folic Acid and Prenatal Vitamins. Most prenatal Vitamins will contain enough folic acid - 400 mg per day seems to be the recommended dose. You can also get folic acid by drinking orange juice and eating dark green leafy vegetables. It is widely recommended that if there is even a chance you may become pregnant you should make sure you have enough folic acid in your diet. Stop Smoking, Avoid Drinking Alcohol and Avoid Caffeine. All of these may reduce the odds of getting pregnant. Talk to your Doctor. Every woman is unique and has different needs. If you want to have a baby, nothing can replace the advice of a qualified medical professional. ConceptionLet's begin with a brief biology lesson that many of you already know. Around the beginning of the second week of your menstrual cycle (on average) hormones from your pituitary gland cause your ovaries to release an egg. This is called ovulation. The released egg then goes to one of your fallopian tubes and waits. Once this happens conception can occur for about the next 24 hours or so. Now, sperm cells can actually survive for a few days. This means that you should be having sex once per day in the days immediately before ovulation occurs if you're trying to have a baby. The point is: If you want to have a baby the key is to know when the days immediately prior to ovulation are. How do you do that? There are several ways. Ovulation Monitoring Kits Ovulation Monitoring Kits look for a hormone called LH (luteinizing hormone). This hormone will reach its peak when you're ovulating. It works by you testing your urine about two weeks into your cycle and finding that LH surge. Once the surge occurs most women will ovulate within two days. Therefore you can maximize the chances of conception by having sex during that time. Use a Calendar The tried, true, and tested historical way to have a baby. Track how many days each cycle lasts and plan to have sex every day for the week surrounding mid-cycle. Many women have irregular cycles. So this method can be hit and miss. Basal Body Temperature Your body temperature at rest is called your Basal Body Temperature. Buy a thermometer and take your temperature when you get up in the morning. Plot it on a graph - an Excel spreadsheet will work nicely. Then watch for trends in how your temperature works from month to month. Ovulation may cause a rise in temperature. Your fertility will peak a few days before your temperature climbs so the odds of conception are greater during that time. Therein lies the rub. By the time you see your temperature spiking it may be too late to conceive. You can use this method, combined with a calendar, to confirm your prediction was right however. Pregnancy Books There are many books on pregnancy available in our bookstore. Some pregnancy books will offer lots of advice on conception.
