Getting Ready for Baby - Baby Shopping

Baby shopping can be fun. It can also be expensive but it doesn't have to be.

Let's talk about what your baby really needs. According to almost all pregnancy books, babies need love (which is free), diapers and clothes, food, and a warm and safe place to sleep. It sounds pretty simple doesn't it?

There are many products that will make your life a little easier. There's nothing wrong with buying lots of expensive things when baby shopping if you can afford it. But don't feel bad if you can't. Your baby doesn't care. All your baby really needs are the five things above.

That being said here are some things for your baby shopping list. Some are essential, others simply make your life easier:

1. Clothes - six full outfits should be fine. When buying clothes think of how fast your baby will out grow them. There's nothing wrong with second hand clothes either.

2. Diapers, Wipes, Cream - new babies will go through about six diapers a day. Sometimes more.

3. A Changing Mat or Changing Table. Makes your life easier.

4. Stroller and Baby Carrier - buy good ones.

5. Car Seat - in most places it's the law to have one (as it should be). Many car seats double as baby carriers. Most pregnancy books advise that you never buy a used car seat.

6. A Crib and Bedding - but not pillows. Pillows are not safe to use until 12 months.

7. Feeding Equipment - Bottles and Formula.

8. Baby Bath, Baby Shampoo, Baby Soap.

9. Toys - the most fun part of baby shopping.

There are many stores that sell the items above. You can also consider hand-me-downs or second hand items in many cases. When you go baby shopping remember three things:

1. Your baby will outgrow any clothes very quickly.

2. Never compromise on anything safety related.

3. Your baby needs functionality. Not fancy logos. Buy things that are comfortable and that work. The fancy logos are for you, not your baby.

There are many pregnancy books in our bookstore. Many will contain detailed baby shopping lists as well as lots of useful advice.
