How to Get Pregnant |
Baby SafetyNothing is more important than baby safety. Your babies wellbeing depends on it. Your babies life could depend on it. This is about more than just baby gates. The key to baby safety is to think like a baby. Babies like to explore, touch everything, and put everything in their mouths. Here is some advice that some baby books offer about baby safety: 1. Do a walkthrough. Pretend that you are a baby, get on your hands and knees in every room of your house looking from your babies eyes: You want to touch and eat everything you can get your hands on. Baby safety is about identifying and eliminating any threats you see. 2. Make sure you have all emergency and poison control phone numbers listed next to all your telephones. Many baby books also suggest that you have a first aid kit handy. 3. Childproof all cabinets containing cleaning supplies, alcohol, knives, weapons, medicine, or anything you would not want your baby to eat or touch. There are many magnetic locking devices available that are affordable and easy to install. 4. Get child proof covers for all electrical outlets and install baby gates at the top and bottom of all stair cases. You can also install baby gates at the entrances to any room you don't want your baby to go into. Baby safety is often about controlling access. 5. Install carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors, and make sure you have a fire evacuation plan that includes how to get the baby out of the house quickly. Buy a fire extinguisher. Any baby safety plan should address fires. 6. Get a really good car seat and install it correctly. 7. Make sure all rugs have non-slip pads under them. 8. Make sure you have a really safe baby bath with traction on the bottom. 9. Turn your water tanks down to 100-115 degrees. 10. Babies should sleep on firm mattresses in well designed cribs. Baby books suggest that babies should not sleep with pillows until they are at least 12 months old to help avoid sudden infant death syndrome. Mattresses should fit snug in the crib so your baby doesn't fall in the sides. Bars on the crib should be two and a quarter inches a part or less. 11. Be mindful of how your pet will react to your baby, especially if you have an older pet or a very young one. Keep an eye on things and be prepared to put up baby gates to keep them apart if needed. Baby gates are also excellent for controlling where pets can and can't go. 12. Talk to any grandparents, aunts, uncles, or anyone watching the baby, about child care. Don't assume they know something because they have children of their own. Quietly "check them out" first - let them come over and take care of the baby while you watch. That way you can teach them what you need them to know - or rule them out as caregivers if you need to. Many of the baby books in our bookstore address baby safety and child proofing your home. They may provide you with some excellent advice.
